2016 Rio Olympics: China Women’s Volleyball dethrone defending Olympic Champion Brazil in SHOCKING five sets

The Women’s volleyball team of China shocks the whole volleyball community and they also made history in dethroning the defending Olympics champions Brazil in the quarterfinal round of the Women’s Volleyball tournament in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The young Chinese squad survived and managed to upset the much veteran Brazilian squad. China defeated Brazil in a very close and thrilling five setter match by the score of 15-25, 25-23, 25-22, 22-25 and 15-13 to earn a spot in the semifinal round.

Most of the roster of the Chinese squad are newcomers in an Olympic stage, despite Brazil dominated the attack and blocking department, China still succeeded in winning this very important match. Brazil got 72 attacks, 12 blocks ad 3 service aces compared to 64 attacks, 9 blocks and 5 service aces of China. Although, Brazil committed 24 errors as compared to 21 errors of China.

The Phenomenal young volleyball star from China, Zhu Ting once again carried the whole Chinese squad who scored a total of 28 points, 26 attacks, and 2 blocks. Zhang Changning and Yan Ni also helped the team with 15 points and 11 points apiece.

On the other side of the court, despite having veteran players who already played in this kind of competition, Brazil unable to defeat and outsmart the much younger Chinese squad. Veteran outside hitter, Fernanda “Fe Garay” Rodrigues led the scoring chores for the Brazilian team who scored 24 points, 19 from attacks, 4 blocks, and 1 service ace. Veteran players, Sheila Castro and Natalia Pereira also helped the team with 17 points and  20 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, Serbia eliminates Russia in straight sets by the score of 25-9, 25-22 and 25-21 to advance to the semifinal round. Tijana Boskovic once again led the Serbian team who scored a total of 20 points, 15 from attacks, and 5 service aces.

This is a heartbreaking loss to Brazil because they lost the chance to win the elusive and once in a lifetime opportunity to win 3 consecutive Olympic gold medal. They won at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics.

This win for China will be a great opportunity to start once again to rule the world’s women’s volleyball. They won their last gold medal on an Olympic stage last 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

China will face Netherlands for the first semifinal match while Serbia will face the USA in the second match. The winners of these games will advance to the final round of the competition and have the chance to take the prestigious Olympic gold medal.
