The United States Men’s National Basketball Team will be facing their toughest opponent to the date at the 2016 Rio Olympics, the Boomers of Australia. Here are all the things you need to know for USA vs. Australia Group A action including previews, predictions and live stream links.
Team USA has dominated their first two opponents, China and Venezuela, beating them by combined 52 points. Kevin Durant is leading the Americans in scoring with 20.5 points per game while Carmelo Anthony recently passed Michael Jordan on the USA Olympic scoring list in the game against Venezuela.
In the 113-69 win over the FIBA Americas champion, Paul George scored a game high 20 points to go along with four rebounds, one assist and one steal. Durant, Anthony, Jimmy Butler and DeAndre Jordan all scored in double figures.
On the other hand, the Australians have been the surprise team in the tournament as they both defeated France and Serbia in their first two games. The Boomers dominated France in their first game while winning 95-80 against Serbia.
The Australia Men’s National Basketball Team is led by a bunch of NBA players including Andrew Bogut, Matthew Dellavedova and Patty Mills. In the 15-point win versus Serbia, Dellavedova and Mills combined for 49 points while Bogut added nine points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three blocks.
Team USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski told USAB.com that he is expecting his team to match up Australia’s intensity. He wants his players to play hard-nose defense and give their all in every single play.
“When we play against Australia, you are going to play against a team that plays as hard as anybody, so we have to match that effort,” Krzyzewski said.
The Americans are still the favorites to win this game despite two great performances from the Australians. USA has too much fire power for Australia but they will not win with a margin of more than 30 points.
