Team USA was surprised with the performance of Team Australia in the 2016 Rio Olympics men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday night. The Americans needed a clutch three-pointer from Kyrie Irving in order to seal their victory against the Australian Boomers, 98-88.
After hitting the crucial shot, Team USA celebrated as they got a seven-point lead against the Boomers. It was a great shot and a familiar one for Draymond Green and Klay Thompson. Fans who watched the game of Team USA and Team Australia compared Irving’s three-pointer with the one he shot in the Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
While praising Kyrie Irving in his Snapchat, Draymond Green can’t help himself but expressed how he felt about the shot. Recalling in the Game 7 of the NBA Finals between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors, Kyrie Irving also made a clutch three-pointer with less than a minute remaining in the game.
Draymond Green and the Warriors’ brass could not easily forget this nightmare since it cost them an NBA championship title. So far, Team Australia has been the only team in the Rio Olympics who managed to scare the mighty Team USA.
“It was very serious,” Irving said of how close he came to playing for Australia, which would’ve later made him ineligible to play for the nation where he grew up. “It was a legit thing until Coach K intervened. He strong-armed me.”
The lead was only four points before Irving released the three-pointer, and the pressure inside the arena was so intense. Though the Australian Boomers lost by 10 points, they earned the respect of everyone. Some people predict that the Boomers will be able to contend for a medal in the basketball Olympic game.
