Veteran international campaigner Andres Nocioni exploded for 37 points and Facundo Campazzo had 33 in leading Argentina to a crucial double overtime win over hosts Brazil, 111-107 in the group stages of the men’s basketball competition of the Rio Olympics 2016 in Brazil.
The Brazilians led for much of the fourth quarter and had a six-point lead with over two minutes to go in the regulation period. But three-pointers from Campazzo and Nocio completed the comeback and forced the extra period.
The Argentines built a seven-point lead early in the second overtime and a Brazil comeback attempt came short as veteran Manu Ginobili iced the game from the free throw line.
Aside from Nocioni and Campazzo, three other Argentines scored in double figures including Luis Scola (14 points and 10 rebounds), Ginobili (13 points and 4 assists) and Patricio Garino (10 points).
The losing side lost a great opportunity to advance to the next round and were led by Nene Hilario (24 points and 11 rebounds) and Marcelo Huertas and Alex Garcia, who had 14 points each. Leandro Barbosa added 10 points.
With Lithuania losing to Spain via a blowout also on Saturday, Argentina is now tied at the top of their group with 3 wins against 1 loss. Argentina and Lithuania are assured of making the next round, the knockout quarterfinals.
Brazil still has a chance to advance to the KO stage but needs Spain to lose big in their final game against Spain if Croatia loses all of their remaining games.
