The Women’s Volleyball National team of the United States of America remained unbeaten after the preliminary round of the Women’s Volleyball tournament in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The USA team has a slow start in the match against China. They dropped the first opening set, but fortunately, they found their groove in the second set and eventually winning the succeeding set. The Americans defeated the Chinese squad in four thrilling set by the score of 22-25, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-19.
The FIVB, the world ranked number one, dominated the attack and service department while the much taller Chinese squad dominated the blocking department. The USA got 63 attacks, 7 blocks, and 5 service aces as compared to 48 attacks, 11 blocks and 3 service aces of China.
China’s faulty errors also helped the USA team to win this game. They committed 22 errors as compared to only USA’s 18 errors.
Veteran outside hitter Jordan Larson led the USA team who scored a total of 18 points, 15 from attacks, 1 block, and 2 service aces. Foluke Akinradewo and Kelsey Robinson also helped the team who both scored 13 points apiece.
This is the fifth straight victory for the Americans, they defeated first Puerto Rico, followed by the Netherlands, Serbia, Italy and China, chronologically.
On China’s side, the phenomenal and ever reliable outside hitter Zhu Ting again led the Chinese squad who scored 23 points, 19 from attacks and 4 blocks. Team captain Ruoqi Hui also helped the team with 14 points, 9 from attacks, 3 blocks, and 2 service aces.
Meanwhile, on the earlier match, after four losing streaks, Italy finally won against Puerto Rico. The Italians defeated the Puerto Ricans in straight sets by the score of 25-14, 25-13 and 25-22.
The newcomer and very young talent, Paola Egonu led again the Italian team with 17 points, 14 from spikes and 3 blocks. The team captain and retiring Antonella Del Core played her last game of her entire career who scored 4 points, 3 from attacks and 1 block.
The USA team will join the Netherlands, Serbia, and China in the quarterfinal round for Pool B while in Pool A Brazil, Russia, North Korea and Japan will also advance to the next round of the tournament. The bracketing for the next round is yet to determine after the last remaining games that will finish today.
