New designs and robots in the upcoming Transformers movie

Early this year, Michael Bay released a few teasers hinting at the arrival of a new Transformers film. Eventually, the director published a few shots from the set of what will be the fifth installment in the series, which is officially called Transformers: The Last Knight. Recently, Bay also unloaded some of the new designs and robots in the upcoming Transformers movie.

One of the robots unveiled by Bay was Sqweeks, a smaller version of the standard, more-than-meets-the-eye Autobot or Decepticon. The cute new entry to the team can transform into a Vespa, and looks to have been designed to appeal to a younger audience. He was rumored to have beaten up BB-8 in a junkyard brawl.

The director also released similar cards for a revamped Drift, and another new addition, Hot Rod. Old (meaning grown men who were born in the 80s) fans of Transformers will remember Hot Rod as the successor of Optimus Prime’s Matrix of Leadership, who led a new generation of Autobots against the evil Galvatron…

Anyway.

The big(ger) screen Hot Rod looks very sleek, and very different from his animated self. Described as “Bumblebee’s brother-in-arms”, it’s still unclear what his role will be in the new movie. Although if Bay will be loyal to the classic animated series then fans can expect the death of Opti… nooooooo.

Drift, who appeared in the last movie with dinosaurs (not Jurassic Park) saw a major overhaul coming in to the new movie. Having previously driven around as a blue Bugatti, Drift (and Michael Bay) decided to leave the French and go German, turning the character into a black and red Mercedes-AMG GT R (which basically means he’s AWESOME).

Hold your (robotic) horses though, as the new designs and robots in the upcoming Transformers movie will not be in theaters until next year. Transformers: The Last Knight will hit US theaters on June 23, 2017, while Transformers 6 will see its way to the screen on June 28, 2019.
