Boxing News: Former heavyweight champion Charles Martin shot in Los Angeles

A former heavyweight boxing champion, Charles Martin, was reportedly shot in Los Angeles but is now recuperating from the injuries.

According to reports from The Sweet Science, Martin, who was with a friend, was shot at by two armed men. The first instance, the assailants missed but Martin chased them in a car but hit a pole.

The suspects returned and fired at Martin again and he suffered a forearm wound, which “lost a copious amount of blood” before the police arrived and brought him to the hospital.

No suspects have been identified according to various reports. ESPN also added that surgery on Martin’s forearm has been successful although there are no reports if he can still return to boxing.

The 30-year-old heavyweight boxer has a record of 23-1-1 in his boxing career with 21 knockouts. His last fight was against Anthony Joshua at the O2 Arena in London, United Kingdom in April earlier this year.

Joshua, one of the top contenders in the division, was a 2012 Olympic gold medalist. He knocked down Martin twice in the second round and Martin was out for the count in the second time.

Martin lost for the first time in his boxing career and he lost the International Boxing Federation (IBF) heavyweight title. Martin was defeated via a second round knockout.

Martin won the vacant IBF heavyweight title against Vyacheslav Glazkov of Ukraine at the Barclays Center in New Jersey, USA.

  • Very reckless on Martin’s part. Several years ago Vernon Foreest got himself killed chasing guys that robbed him. Martin should know better at his age.
