It has been a long while since boxer Andre Ward experienced fighting in the ring. His fight against Alexander Brand on HBO is scheduled on August 6. However, the biggest challenge in his career would be against Sergey Kovalev and is now set in stone for this coming fall.
Andre Ward has not fought for two years from 2013, except to combat legal issues against his promoter. Count some of his injuries in between fights, and you’ll get a better picture of how much time he spent inactive.
He’s highly regarded as the most complete active boxer today, but he’s only fought twice since his long-awaited return. Both were against much lesser competition in an effort to rid himself of ring rust. Hence, the Andre Ward vs Sergey Kovalev is the fight everyone is looking out for on November 19.
His next opponent, Alexander Brand, warns that he’ll have something for everything Ward may bring, according to BoxingScene.
“I don’t want to show too much at this media workout but I’ve got something in store for the day of the fight. It doesn’t really matter that the fight is in Ward’s hometown; it’s going to be a fight. Wherever it is, whether it’s in his backyard or anything else, I’m coming to fight and that’s the most important thing,” Alexander Brand said.
In contrast to Andre Ward, 32, Brand is 39 years old and entered the professional scene at the age of 32. Ward could have retired during his legal squabbles years ago and still be considered among the best in his generation.
Andre Ward says he is not looking past Alexander Brand, but most fans already have their sights on Nov.19 for the Ward vs Kovalev on HBO PPV, as confirmed by Head for Main Events Kathy Duva.
It is a fight where opinions are split in the middle, taking into consideration Ward’s absence and movement up in weight versus Kovalev’s power and dominance.
The Andre Ward vs Sergey Kovalev will be the former’s third fight of the year.
