Canelo Alvarez started his boxing career at the age of 15 years old, allowing him to build a strong fan base that avidly supports him today, at the peak of his career. He’s recently drawn strong criticisms for choosing lesser quality opponents, protracting the real fight: Canelo Alvarez vs. GGG.
GGG (Gennady Golovkin) is widely regarded as one of the most feared boxers today. In fact, Hall of Fame boxing trainer Freddie Roach personally sees GGG as the best there is Pound 4 Pound.
Canelo Alvarez has an astounding record of 47-1-1 compared to GGG (35-0) and he’s 8 years younger at 26.
GGG is bigger, and is known for his formidable knockout ratio, but Canelo has more experience and youth is on his side. It’s a matchup that looks intriguing on paper, one that should be taking place now, instead of Alvarez facing Liam Smith.
Gennady Golovkin became the WBC middleweight champion by default after Canelo chose to vacate his position. Many feel he will delay the fight for as long as he can, fearing an imminent loss.
According to a report by Bad Left Hook Alvarez said, “I have always said that I fear no man, and when I feel my body is ready, I will take on anyone and everyone in the division that I am fighting.”
This statement simply implies that he wasn’t ready to take on GGG when he opted to fight Liam Smith, but fight fans have now a better reason to believe that Gennady Golovkin would soon force his rival to face him.
“Look, Golovkin did an interview in the LA Times & he said we were going to make a ‘bullshi*t offer’ or like $2 million or something like that. I can tell you this much- the offer is going to be more than that & we’ll see who’s the clown, whether they accept it or not” Eric Gomez, Sr. VP of Golden Boy Promotions said.
He’s made it clear that they’re interested in making Canelo Alvarez vs. GGG happen, and Canelo, himself wants it and wants to make an offer of more than $2 million in September 2017.
Eric Gomez said their offer will be “the most money he’s ever made” as reported by Boxing Scene.
Do you think Canelo Alvarez will finally decide to fight Gennady Golovkin, which is probably the biggest fight that could be made in boxing? Are fans willing to take an excuse for another delay?
Alvarez is expected to fight Billy Joe Saunders early next year, while Daniel Jacobs will test Gennady Golovkin.
With GGG having all the belts, except for one, the Billy Joe Saunders fight is a necessity for the Mexican. Meanwhile, Daniel Jacobs will fight, Sergio Mora on Friday, and if he wins, both he and Gennady Golovkin could go at it is on the same schedule.
Let’s see who’s the clown now.
