Due to the enormous weight and size difference between Kell Brook and his upcoming Kazakhstani opponent Gennady Golovkin, it is easy to write off his chances on September 10. However, the English boxer believes he can win in a historical fashion and shock the world as Muhammad Ali once did.
Gennady Golovkin, nicknamed “GGG”, is one of the most feared boxers today. A report by Sky Sports ranks him ahead Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev to take the number 1 spot.
By fighting him, one can no longer accuse Kell Brook of not fighting quality fighters, but it is also a fight he could get killed in the ring for.
It is a matchup where Gennady Golovkin’s power could make a difference. One punch could simply overturn the tide, or end the fight. GGG has a record of 35-0 with 32 fights won by knockout.
“Ahh! I’m gonna shock the world!” Kell Brook said, imitating the great Muhammad Ali in an interview with iFL TV; referencing to Muhammad Ali vs Sonny Liston where Ali won in a major upset back in 1964.
The fight is not just about power, but a lot of things- boxing IQ, skills, and timing. GGG is dangerous in the sense that he can take a punch and knock out an opponent at the same time. Brook believes he can stand up and take the power of Gennady Golovkin.
Speaking of boxing history, of Muhammad Ali and the all time greats, one legend who sees himself in Kell Brook is Sugar Ray Leonard.
Sugar Ray Leonard, a natural welterweight too, came out of retirement to defeat Marvin Hagler in their middleweight bout in 1987 by Split Decision.
According to a report by Sky Sports Sugar Ray Leonard believes that movement will be the key to approach a fight with “GGG.”
“He also has to be in the best shape ever, capital E, to maintain the tempo and the pace of Golovkin” Leonard said.
“He has to be mobile, in and out, and try to confuse triple-G.”
On who wins between Kell Brook vs GGG, “The general consensus is that he does not have a chance, he can’t win, but he has to believe in himself.” Leonard said.
Many point out Brook’s fight against Carson Jones as a sort of measure of his chances against Gennady Golovkin.
Carson Jones almost beat Brook when they fought, breaking his nose and almost floored him in the final round only to be saved by the bell. It was a fight Brook barely won by Majority Decision, and many wonder what a fighter of the caliber of GGG could do, if a relative unknown like Carson Jones had done so much damage to him.
Sugar Ray Leonard did not fail to admire GGG’s body shots saying, “I love his body shots, that is something that has been missing in boxing for so long.
