UFC president Dana White finally changed his stance and believes that the superfight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will happen. Though he’s not confident that “The Notorious” will win, White gave four advantages of McGregor over Mayweather.
“A lot of things make this fight intriguing,” White said. “Conor McGregor is huge. He’s in the prime of his career. Floyd is 40. Floyd has always had problems with southpaws; Conor is a southpaw, and Conor hits hard. When he hits people, they go. Floyd is definitely not knocking him out. That’s for sure. I’m not saying Conor would win this boxing match, but it sure makes it interesting.”
Since the Mayweather-McGregor superfight started to create noise again, UFC president Dana White openly expressed his disagreement. He tried to give a fight offer to both fighters but Floyd Mayweather Jr. just laughed on his proposal. “Money” and “The Notorious” believes that the potential bout will be the biggest pay-per-view in the history of fighting sports.
Earlier this month, Flocombat reported that T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas has put the June 10 date on hold for the mega-fight between McGregor and Mayweather. After hearing the news, White gave a statement, saying the fight is “nowhere near being done” and “there is no target date whatsoever.” However, White took back what he said and claimed that the fight is going to happen.
UFC president Dana White thinks McGregor-Mayweather fight will happen
In an appearance on “Conan” on Wednesday, White said that it’s only a matter of time before the fight will happen. However, he also revealed that there are no official details of the event yet.
“I do think it’s going to happen,” White told Conan O’Brien. “I think it’s going to be a tough deal, because, obviously, there are a lot of egos involved in this deal and a lot of people, so that always makes it tougher. On the flip side, there’s so much money involved, I just don’t see how it doesn’t happen.”
White’s statement came as a surprise since he had been mostly dismissive of the megafight. It could be a sign that the much-awaited bout will really happen. As of now, most people believe that it will be a one-sided fight in favor of Floyd Mayweather Jr. Though he’s a respectable standup fighter in UFC, it will be the first time Conor McGregor will fight in the boxing ring. However, Mayweather shouldn’t be too much confident as one punch can change everything.
