Brett Favre Officially Files Retirement Papers with NFL

Brett Favre has moved a step closer to ending his NFL career by filing his official retirement papers. Fox Sports originally reported the story, and NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed the news to USA TODAY.

Favre, 41, said at several points this season he did not expect to return to the NFL for a 21st season.

Favre did not play in three of the season’s final four games for the Minnesota Vikings, because of a shoulder injury and a concussion. This brought his NFL-record streak of consecutive starts by a quarterback to an end at 297 games.

“It’s time, I mean, I know it’s time,” Favre said after the Vikings’ finale. “And that’s OK, it is. I hold no regrets. I can’t think of too many players off-hand that can walk away and say that.”

On Sunday night, Favre’s official website sent out an e-mail advertising signed “Thanks for the Memories” merchandise.
