Cardinals take Game 1 of NLCS over Giants

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the San Francisco Giants 6-4 on Sunday night in Game 1 of the NLCS.

St. Louis got off to a hot start, scoring two runs in the second inning off a David Freese home run and then four more runs in the fourth.  As a result, Giants starter Madison Bumgarner did not even last four innings, ultimately giving up eight hits and six earned runs in 3.2 innings.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants’ starters have allowed 19 earned runs in 30.1 innings in the playoffs with zero making it through the sixth, a trend that will surely have to change if San Francisco is to beat the Cardinals.

Nevertheless, the Giants nearly battled all the way back, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth, all with two outs, to cut the deficit to two.  From there, St. Louis’ bullpen shut the door on the Giants, pitching 5.1 shutout innings and allowing only two baserunners from the sixth frame on, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The two teams resume the series tonight, as St. Louis sends Chris Carpenter to the mound to face San Francisco’s Ryan Vogelsong.
