Charlize Theron who is fresh from a lead role in the Oscar-winning movie Mad Max: Fury Road is set to join the cast of Fast and Furious. The Guardian reports that Charlize Theron has signed on to join the eight installments of the movie.
The franchise’s official Twitter account confirmed the news.
“Our crew will face its greatest adversary in our next film. Welcome, Charlize Theron to the Fast family. 4.14.17. #F8,” it posted. The message was accompanied by a picture of the blonde actress.
Theron is set to join long-time Fast & Furious stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez and the last movie’s official villain: Jason Statham. It will be the first film of the franchise following the death of its leading man, Paul Walker.
News about Theron joining the cast and crew of Fast &Furious started doing the rounds since February. No details about the upcoming movie have been revealed yet, apart from the fact that the South African actor will play a baddie.
According to a report published in Variety, the role of the villain in Fast 8 was written with Theron in mind from the start. Her power-packed performance in the Oscar-winning movie Mad Max: Fury Road has already impressed audiences and critics. Playing the role of one-armed hero, Imperator Furiosa, her performance has added to the ongoing Hollywood debate about diversity.
Her new role in the eight installmentof the movie will add another feather to her already decorated hat. The previous installment Fast & Furious 7 had made $1.516 billion at the global box office and entered the all-time box office Top 10.
Fast & Furious star and producer Vin Diesel confirmed in February that the Fast & Furious franchise will stretch to 10 movies before halting. Fast 8 is slated for release on 14 April 2017 followed by Fast & Furious 9 on 19 April 2019. The final episode, Fast & Furious 10 will debut on 2 April 2021.
