Chargers announce team captains

The San Diego Chargers officially announced their team captains for the 2012 season on Thursday.

On the offense, quarterback Philip Rivers, tight end Antonio Gates, and offensive line center Nick Hardwick were named captains on the offensive end, according to SportsPageMagazine.

This will be Philip River’s seventh straight year as captain for the Chargers.

NBC San Diego reports that linebacker Takeo Spikes and safety Eric Weddle have been chosen as captains on the defensive end.

Takeo Spikes has been very consistent throughout his career and will be entering his 200th straight game.

Two-time pro-bowler Eric Weddle is coming off his best season leading the NFL with seven interceptions, tied with New England Patriots cornerback Kyle Arrington and Green Bay Packers Charles Woodson.

And last but not least, for the special teams, safety Darrell Stuckey had been selected to lead the way.

This will be Stuckey’s first year as captain.

Now that the team captains had been announced, the San Diego Chargers can look ahead into the season and know who to follow as the Chargers take on their division rivals, the Oakland Raiders on Monday.
