Cleveland Indians acquire Jason Kubel from Diamondbacks
The Cleveland Indians acquired oufielder Jason Kubel from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday.
According to MLB.com, Kubel was designated for assignment on Tuesday after struggling in his second year with the Diamondbacks. The Indians are hoping Kubel could help them make a push for the playoffs in September.
“In acquiring Jason, we feel that we really fortified our organizational depth and we brought in a guy that’s had success in the American League and was a really productive player as recently as last year,”Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said. “This year he’s obviously had a tough year to date, but we’re excited to bring him back to the American League and give him an opportunity to contribute.”
According to the Associated Press, Kubel hit .220 with five homers and 32 RBIs in 89 games with Arizona. Kubel hit 30 homers last season for the Diamondbacks. He will be used as a designated hitter and in the outfield according to manager Terry Francona.
The Indians trail the AL Central leading the Detroit Tigers by 6 1/2 games and are four back in the Wild Card chase.
