Cody Ross and Red Sox agree on one year deal
The Boston Red sox confirmed the signing of outfielder Cody Ross to a one-year contract on Thursday. To make room on the 40 man roster, right handed pitcher Scott Atchison was designated for assignment.
The deal is for $3 million. The Associated Press was the first to report the deal when Ross sent them a text message saying he needed to take a physical.
According to USA Today, Ross batted .240 with 14 home runs and 52 RBI for the San Fransisco Giants last season. He also played at least 22 games at each outfield position.
During the Giants World Series run in 2010 Ross was the National League Championship Series MVP. He was a vital member of that team after he was claimed on waivers from the Florida Marlins. Ross is a career .261 hitter over his eight seasons as a major leaguer.
Ross joins the Boston Red Sox who had a historic collapse last season and ended up missing the postseason. The signing could be to replace Carl Crawford who had wrist surgery and may not be ready for opening day. The outfield of Crawford, Jacoby Ellsbury and Cody Ross will make for a solid defensive trio in Fenway Park.
The Red Sox look to rebound from that disastrous collapse in 2011 and start fresh in 2012.
