E. J. Manuel to miss remainder of the preseason
E. J. Manuel seemed to have the upper hand in the Buffalo Bills quarterback position, after his performance in their preseason game Friday night. But it has been announced that Manuel will undergo minor knee surgery, and miss the remainder of the preseason.
Manuel is coming into his first season in the NFL, and was the first quarterback drafted in the most recent NFL Draft. He and Kevin Kolb are in competition to be the Bills starting quarterback this season. Manuel had taken a big step ahead of Kolb with his performance in the preseason. Through two games, Manuel has gone 26 of 33 with 199 yards and two touchdowns, according to ESPN.com. Kolb threw an interception on Friday night.
Manuel brings something different to the Bills as he is a dual threat. He has the ability to run and throw, which he has shown in the preseason as well, rushing four times for 29 yards.
Manuel woke up with swelling in his knee Saturday morning and the Bills determined he needed to have the surgery. Bills coach Doug Marrone didn’t have much to say on the topic, ”He will miss the remainder of the preseason and then be re-evaluated at that time, Kevin Kolb will be our starting quarterback for this weekend’s game at Washington,” said Marrone, according to USA Today.
It appears as though Kevin Kolb will win this quarterback competition by default, at least initially. Depending on how long it takes for Manuel to recover, it seems very likely that he will be able to take over as the Bills starting quarterback early on in the 2013 season.
