Captain America: Steve Rogers#1: Marvel brings back Steve Rogers as secret Hydra agent

Marvel comics unveiled a shocking twist on Wednesday morning as Captain America: Steve Rogers#1 hit the stands. The new comics reveals that Captain America supports the evil group Hydra, a former Nazi organization.

In an unprecedented move, Marvel has released two comics simultaneously on Captain America from the same writer. Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson are sharing the mantle of Captain America. This edition builds closely on Avengers: Standoff crossover. Steve’s status quo is re-established in the first chapter with hints of upcoming bigger conflicts. Heavy dose of exposition driven narration will captivate the readers.

Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort in an interview with the TIME, revealed how Marvel decided to make Steve Rogers a secret Hydra operative.

“Nick Spencer, who is the writer of the series, pitched us the story as part and parcel of restoring Steve to his youth and vigor. In the comics, he’s been old for awhile. The super soldier serum that was keeping him young had been broken down, so for the 75th anniversary, Nick had this notion that we were going to restore him. But then we went into this other story about Hydra, and this is only the tip of the iceberg,” he said.

Brevoort is also confident about the twist of the storyline gelling with the past editions of the series.

“It will. Issue 2 kind of winds the clock back a little bit and lays out exactly how and why things are the way they are. And it lays out a roadmap for where things are headed in the future.” Brevoort explained. “But people will be able to connect the dots and follow the trail of breadcrumbs.”
