With the imminent departure of Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) from Criminal Minds, the head honcho role at the Behavioral Analysis Unit will become unexpectedly vacant. But according to rumors, fan-favorite Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) will be the assigned to fill in the role, and will return from her London assignment.
After news about Gibson’s departure was confirmed by media, fans of the show immediately wondered who would take over the BAU leader role. Fortunately, CBS immediately addressed concerns and announced that Brewster would be returning to reprise her role.
The actress even shared a Tweet last July to signify her return.
With Brewster’s return, Criminal Minds only has one more problem to solve-explaining Hotch’s disappearance from the show.
Criminal Minds: New cast and Hotch’s departure
According to sources, Hotch will still be in the first two episodes of the series to just put some closure, and an explanation, into his exit from Criminal Minds. This will also pave the way for Prentiss to take over the leadership role of the FBI unit. Reports also indicate that fatigue and overwork will lead to Hotch’s retirement which will be the reason for his absence from the show.
Thomas Gibson was involved in an onset altercation with one of the writers of the show which led to his contract’s termination. A legal battle between the actor and CBS and ABC are ongoing.
Meanwhile, Criminal Minds will also be adding two more regulars in the upcoming season. Adam Rodriguez, who will be filling in for Shemar Moore, comes in as a new recruit, while Aisha Tyler will be coming back as Dr. Tara Lewis.
With the new (and old) changes, Criminal Minds fans are definitely hyped for what appears to be a new era for the TV show. Season 12 will premier on September 28 at 9PM.
