‘Deadliest Catch’ captains Sig Hansen, Casey and Josh Harris does whiskey challenge

Discovery Channel’s hit series, “Deadliest Catch,” gets some time off from crabbing in the Bering Sea. Captain Sig Hansen of FV Northwestern together with co-captains Casey and Josh Harris of FV Cornelia Marie in a whiskey challenge.

The whiskey challenge is a fundraising effort for the Seattle Fisherman’s Memorial and Sea Scouts. The challenge is for the captains to sell their brand of Storm Tossed Rye Whiskey and the first sell out wins. Each brand of whiskey differs in flavor and best suits the captain that sells them.

According to Fremont Mischief Distillery website, Captain Sig Hansen’s Storm Tossed Rye known as “bow bender” is a whiskey barrel-aged in the Northwestern’s bow. Hansen, who will sit out in the show’s season 13, managed to age the whiskey while they fishing in the rough water of the West Bering Sea.

“It surges with deep, pungent flavor and a hint of the briny sea,” the website describes Hansen’s whiskey.

Meanwhile, Capt. Casey and co-Capt Josh Harris’ Storm Tossed Rye was barrel-aged also on board the Cornelia Marie’s bow. But through the smoother waters of the North Bering Sea near the ice pack.

“Intense yet smooth toasted caramel, woodsy smoke, and a slight hint of the salty sea,” the site added.

Storm Tossed Rye Whiskey is the latest release from Fremont Mischief Distillery and the main product of this year’s Whiskey Challenge. It is to raise funds for the Seattle Fisherman’s Memorial and Sea Scouts.

The Seattle Fisherman’s Memorial and Sea Scouts is a memorial designed in 1987 to “honor commercial fishermen from the Seattle area who have been lost at sea”. The memorial could be found at Docks 8 and 9 at Seattle’s Fishermen’s Terminal. The memorial got dedicated on Oct. 8, 1988.

The monument is a 30-foot cast stone column supporting a bronze standing male figure holding a fishing line in his proper right hand with a fish on it. Adjacent to the stone column is a concrete wall with a bronze plaque that displays the names of some 460 Seattle fishermen who died since 1900.

The captain’s brand of whiskey will be on sale until supply lasts. The whiskeys will be on sale at Southcenter, Olympia, and Federal Way starting Sept. 6 while it will be on sale the following day at Bellevue, Lynnwood, Puyallup, Northgate, and Silverdale.
