James Bobin has confirmed the reports that he will direct the upcoming franchise crossover MIB 23. Back in March, rumors first broke out that Bobin was in advanced talks to direct the upcoming Sony pictures Men in Black and 21 Jump Street franchise mashup.
Bobin, who also directed the Muppets and Alice through the Looking Glass, will take over the duty from Phil Lord and Chris Miller who can’t direct the upcoming movie due to their commitment to the Han Solo movie. However, the two will still be involved in the franchise as the film’s producer.
Reports said that Sony plans to bring in young talents to replace Men in Black’s main characters Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. In addition to Smith and Jones, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are also expected to reprise their detective roles from 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street.
Not much information is known about the upcoming movie at this point, not even the release date, but Bobin plans to start the movie later this year. Currently, the storyline is being developed.
Director Phil Lord said that the third Jump street movie will be based on the gag reels shown at the end of the second film. Lord also added that “22 Jump Street” ended with fake sequels that showed all the possible stories they could explore in the next movie. In addition, the gag reels will also include an outer space-set dubbed “2121 Jump Street”.
According to Collider, the new film will be officially named MIB 23, and it will start shooting later this year. There’s no clear words yet as to who will be included in Bobin’s new film, but actors Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Will Smith are likely to join Bobin.
Right now, none of them have signed on for the upcoming crossover, but the likelihood of both Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum joining the said project are pretty high at this time.
