Star Wars Rogue One release date is still expected in December this year, but it sounds like the film couldn’t reshoot that much of the story in the summer. The production team revealed reasons behind drastic course change.
Rumors about possible alterations in Star Wars Rogue One were already talked about before. They stated that it won’t be similar with the other films in the series.
The changes probably rooted with too pressured schedule to the premiere this December and other filming failures that occurred. Until now, the whole production team kept their reshoots ongoing.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Lucasfilm’s in-house brain trust weighed in on the films similarly to the way it’s done at Pixar. They said that Star Wars Rogue One needed to punch up its emotion and action beats.
Thus, bringing Bourne screenwriter and “Michael Clayton” filmmaker Tony Gilroy to the set was the solution to give additional dialogue and direct some secondary units for the movie. He will be collaborating with Gareth Edwards, who directed a successful 2014’s Godzilla.
“I mean it was always part of the plan to do re-shoots. We always knew we were coming back somewhere to do stuff. We just didn’t know what it would be until we started sculpting the film in the edit,” he mentioned.
“There’s lots of little things that we have to get, but it’s all little things within the preexisting footage,” Edwards added.
He also explained that the cast population is huge. Thus, individual shots were divided into small groups to schedule the shooting depending on everyone’s schedule.
“Obviously, you’ve got to work around everyone’s schedule, and everyone’s on different films all over the world, and so it’s a bit of a logistical nightmare. That’s why I think it’s been blown out of proportion a little bit,” Edwards continued.

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm and producer of Rogue one, said that the tone of the movie was not altered. It will remain as a Band of Brothers-style combat tale from the last year’s celebration event.
“There’s nothing about the story that’s changing, with a few things that we’re picking up in additional photography. I think that’s the most important thing, to reassure fans that it’s the movie we intended to make,” she cited.
