Eric Wright finally ends up with the 49ers
Eric Wright is going to the San Francisco 49ers after all, but instead of through a trade, Wright is choosing to join the 49ers after being cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Bucs had originally agreed on a trade with the 49ers to send Wright to San Francisco, but Wright failed his physical on July 19 and the trade didn’t go through, according to USA Today. On Thursday, Wright signed with the 49ers after being cut by Tampa Bay.
Wright signed a one-year deal and then the 49ers placed him on the Non-Football Injury list.
“Eric is currently tending to a personal matter and he will join the team as soon as possible,” 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement.
Wright is presumed to offer some competition and depth in the 49ers secondary with Nnamdi Asomugha. Asomugha, who the 49ers signed this off-season, is currently a backup for starting cornerbacks Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown. With Chris Culliver down for the season Wright will provide added depth.
A player on the NFI list can be activated at any time, but if he remains on it by the time the regular season starts he must stay on it for six weeks. However, Wright faces a possible suspension for an arrest due to a July DUI.
“We are pleased to welcome Eric to the 49ers organization and look forward to his contributions,”49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a team statement, via NFL.com. “Eric is currently tending to a personal matter and he will join the team as soon as possible.”
