F1 News: Ferrari to test new upgraded version of Halo, Halo 2 coming next year?

Ferrari has announced plans to test a newly upgraded version of the Halo cockpit protection system at the Austrian Grand Prix.

The Maranello-based outfit was the first to test the original Halo system at pre-season testing at Barcelona in Spain. The upgraded and smaller version, which has been nicknamed as Halo 2, is said to be made up of a very super strong material called titanium, and it’s most likely to be adopted for next year’s campaign.

Ferrari received the go-ahead signal for 2017 Formula 1 cockpit design introduction after it was decided in the FIA meeting that it was too late to introduce the Red Bull’s proposed design for next year. The FIA claimed that Ferrari’s Halo system, which has been more extensively tested, is the much safer platform and the most viable option for now.

In that meeting, it was been told that a deadline of July 1 will be imposed for confirmation of which device would be given the green light for next year’s deployment.

Ferrari has also confirmed that the upgraded and smaller Halo version will be fitted to one of its cars on Friday. Reports said that Ferrari will be running through a series of evaluation with FIA officials who have been working hard on proofing the Halo design following recent crash tests.

Finally, the FIA has promised F1 teams that it will decide by early July about whether or not the Ferrari Halo will make it by next year.

As for the Red Bull’s proposed design, the future of Aeroscreen design is now in doubt after Red Bull revealed it had suspended development of it because it did not want to keep spending a huge amount of its resource at it at a time when development work for the 2017 car is already quite intense.
