Bayern Munich FC coach says ‘we must attack intelligently’ in Champions League match against Juventus FC

On the eve of their much awaited match against Juventus FC, Bayern Munich FC manager Josep Guardiola cautioned his players to avoid conceding plays and must try their best to defend if they want to advance to the next round of the UEFA Champions League.

In an interview with UEFA News both Guardiola and Juventus manager Massimilliano Allegri gave their thoughts going into their match.

Guardiola discloses that they will not take Juventus lightly since playing in the Round of 16 is always difficult and complicated. He adds that the match against their Italian counterparts will be interesting with the way they are playing recently.

“Juventus didn’t start the season well, but things are working well now with their style of play so it’s going to be an interesting game. We’ll try to play well and score a few goals, which won’t be easy because they have not been conceding. We’ve got to attack intelligently and avoid conceding set pieces as they are maybe the best team in Europe from set pieces,” Guardiola said.

Bayern, according to Guardiola, is nursing injuries as well with Holger Badstuber (ankle), Jerome Boateng (ankle) and Javi Martinez (knee) but hopes that the rest of his players can cope up with in both offense and defense.

“We have [injury] problems, but what can we do? We hardly have any players – we have Tasci and Benatia, but they have either just arrived or trained for only two or three days. I expect Juve to press high up the field, but if we can cope with that pressure, then we will see. We don’t have any central defenders – that’s how it is. With Bonucci, Barzagli, Khedira, Pogba they are all really big; and our central defender is Kimmich,” Guardiola explains.

For the host side, Juventus is also nursing some of its players to injury with Kwadwo Asamoah (thigh) and Martin Caceres (ankle) while Alex Sandro (thigh), Giorgo Chiellini (calf) and Mario Mandzukic (thigh) are doubtful to play.

Massimilliano Allegri foresees the match with lots of goals and they too must depend on the defense and relieve the pressure on the ball when attacking to get good opportunities. He adds that with the way they played since the start of the season, they have earned the right to be in the Round of 16.

“Bayern have a way of playing and I doubt they are going to change that. We’ve got to play a great game in defence but above all be very good at relieving the pressure when we get possession. We’ve got to be on their level technically and tactically,” Allegri added.
