NBA Rumors and Predictions: Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies to miss playoffs, according to ESPN expert

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is not happy that their prize center Dirk Nowitzki is thinking of opting out this summer to sign a two to three-year maximum contract for the next couple of seasons in the NBA.

Every season, the battle for playoffs spots in the Western Conference is tough. Nothing will change in the 2016-2017 NBA Season and the Dallas Mavericks and Memphis Grizzlies won’t be making the postseason, according to one NBA expert.

Zach Lowe of ESPN predicts that both the Mavericks and Grizzlies will not make the NBA Playoffs next year.

Lowe admitted that Memphis still has a chance if all of their stars are healthy.

“If Memphis’ stars stay healthy, this prediction will be wrong. Marc Gasol is in great shape, and people around the team say the players already love coach David Fizdale. The pieces fit, and moving Zach Randolph to the bench nudges Memphis into the pace-and-space, switch-everything era,” Lowe wrote about Memphis’ chances in the new season.

Lowe contends that the Grizzlies stars, Mike Conley Marc Gasol and Chandler Parsons are all coming from major injuries. Their 100% health would be crucial if they want to keep up with the playoff contenders in the West. Parsons was with Dallas last season and was the big acquisition in free agency by the Grizzlies.

Lowe also added that the Grizzlies’ bench needs to improve, even if they already moved veteran forward Zach Randolph to the reserve role. There are NBA rumors that the Grizzlies want to move Randolph for a younger player.

For Dallas, Lowe has the same issue with the lack of depth and injuries like in Memphis.

“Still, the lack of off-the-bounce verve in the starting lineup is alarming, and a ton of these dudes are coming off injury,” Lowe said of Dallas noting that the likes of Wesley Matthews is coming off a major surgery.

Dallas will feature a starting line-up of Andrew Bogut, Dirk Nowitzki, Harrison Barnes, Wesley Matthews and Deron Williams. Their frontcourt and point guard are old and their shooting guard and center have suffered injuries last season. Nowitzki is also not the same player in his prime and there are speculations that this is the year that the German shooter will finally retire after this season.

Should the Dallas Mavericks and Memphis Grizzlies both struggle this season, the likely teams to replace them in the playoffs are the Utah Jazz, Minnesota Timberwolves or New Orleans Pelicans.
