Latest NBA trade rumors have linked Blake Griffin to the New York Knicks where he will join Carmelo Anthony and Derrick Rose to form a star trio at the Big Apple. According to speculations, getting Griffin could cost the Knicks young star Kristaps Porzingis and veteran Joakim Noah.
Mentioning Porzingis in trade rumors is already considered a bad thing for New York since he has All-Star or superstar potential from what he was able to show in his rookie season.
The young 21-year-old from Latvia averaged 14.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.9 blocks last season. The Knicks may decide to trade him this season but only if they are desperate enough to land a postseason slot.
Other rumors claim that the Knicks could acquire Griffin even if they won’t give up Porzingis. But outside of Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah and Porizingis, New York has no trade assets to speak of. They can give up future draft picks but it’s unlikely that the Clippers will settle for those offers.
The Knicks also can’t trade Noah, who earns about $17 million next season, until December so New York has currently no trade assets to deal with the Clippers.
RealGM Trade Checker allows the Blake Griffin for Kristaps Porzingis, Joakim Noah trade. But this is unlikely since the Knicks won’t have much depth in the frontcourt if the deal happens.
However, there are speculations in Los Angeles that the Clippers will be desperate to deal Griffin and another star, Chris Paul this season. The worry in L.A. is that both could leave via free agency after the 2016-2017 NBA Season.
This is a similar situation with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Kevin Durant in the recent offseason. The former OKC franchise player chose to leave for the Golden State Warriors and the Thunder was left with nothing because he was a restricted free agent.
Both Blake Griffin and Chris Paul are restricted free agents in the 2017 offseason. If the Clippers struggle early in the regular season, it’s not far-fetched to think Doc Rivers will trade them even for just future draft picks so they won’t lose them for nothing like OKC did with Durant this summer.
NBA trade rumors of Knicks-Clippers involving Blake Griffin are making the headlines but unlikely at this point.
