Barcelona forward Neymar had his personal properties seized by the order of the Brazilian federal court. The properties are worth close to $50 million and include his private jet as well as his yacht.
The Brazilian government has alleged Neymar of failing to pay proper taxes during his time with the Brazil football club Santos from 2011 to 2013, as reported by Spanish paper Marca.
The 24-year-old Neymar used his private jet to travel to Brazil for World Cup qualifying matches and holidays. The Barcelona superstar may have to face jail-time if he fails to pay the regulators what he owes. However, everything can be avoided if Lionel Messi’s teammate can pay up the money in time.
“Since we arrived in Spain we have been under attack [from the tax office] and it has extended to Brazil. For the last two and a half years, we have had to defend ourselves from accusations.” Neymar Sr, father of the Brazilian superstar said, as reported by The Guardian.
Both Neymar and his father were fined $111,600 in Januray by a Brazilian court for failing to pay taxes on 2007-08.
Barcelona’s capture of Neymar also had been done under murky circumstances which led to the alleged departure of former club president Sandro Rosell. Barcelona paid the Spanish government a tax-fraud settlement of $16.15 million for Neymar’s transfer.
Neymar is not the first Barcelona superstar to face trouble regarding unpaid taxes. Argentina forward Lionel Messi as well as midfielder Javier Mascherano have been targeted for tax evasions.
Messi’s trial is set to begin in May while Mascherano has be fined and sentenced to prison time last month.
