Nascar announced the 2014 class to the Nascar Hall of Fame on Wednesday. It was the fifth class to enter the Hall of Fame.

The five newest members of the Nascar Hall of Fame will be inducted on January 29, 2014. The class was voted on by a 54-member panel that included media members, Nascar officials, track operators, and former competitors. The top five vote-getters were elected from a ballot of 25, according to USA Today Sports. There was no percentage required for induction, and voters got to choose up to five names.

Jerry Cook, Joe Weatherly, and Wendell Scott were the next top vote-getters after those who got inducted, according to Nascar.com. Richard Childress, Rick Hendrick, Dale Jarrett, Benny Parsons, and Fireball Roberts were the top five vote-getters in the fan vote.

Racetrack magnate Bruton Smith, 1960 Nascar champion Rex White, and short track legend Larry Phillips were among first-time nominees that weren’t elected, according to USA Today Sports.

Here is the Nascar Hall of Fame Class of 2014:

Tim Flock: Flock received 76 percent of the vote and was one of Nascar’s earliest stars. He won the premier series championship in 1952 and 1955. Flocks 39 wins put him 18th on the all-time win list. In 1955 he won Nascar’s only sports car race, and in 1998 he was names one of Nascar’s 50 greatest drivers.

Maurice Petty: Petty joins his father Lee, brother Richard, and cousin Dale Inman in the Hall of Fame. He supplied the horsepower for most of Richard’s 200 wins as the chief engine builder at Petty Enterprises. Petty also built winning engines of other drivers, including his dad Lee.

Dale Jarrett: Jarrett joins his father Ned as the third father-son combination to be inducted into the Hall, behind the Frances and Pettys. He won three Daytona 500’s and two Brickyard 400’s. He won the championship in 1999. After his driving career ended, Jarrett went to the broadcast booth, just like his father Ned. He is currently a Nascar analyst for ESPN.

Jack Ingram: Ingram made only 19 starts in the premier series, but won three consecutive championships in the Late Model Sportsman Division (1972-74). He won the Nascar Busch (now Nationwide) Series title in 1982, its inaugural season and he won it again in 1985. Ingram had 31 wins and was named one of Nascar’s greatest drivers in 1988.

Fireball Roberts: Roberts earned his nickname Fireball from playing baseball, and was known for winning the big events. He won the Daytona 500 in 1962 and the Southern 500 in 1958 and 1963. Roberts won seven times at Daytona International Speedway and was named one of Nascar’s 50 greatest drivers in 1998.

Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski will remain the coach of the US Olympic Mens basketball team. Krzyzewski was expected to step down, but it was confirmed on Wednesday that he’ll return as coach of the men’s team.

Krzyzewski has lead the American team since 2005, winning gold and the 2008 and 2012 Olympics and winning the 2010 world basketball championship. He called coaching the men’s team the “ultimate honor” to represent his country. The U.S. men’s team has a 50-game winning streak dating back to 2006, according to the Associated Press.

“I really thought I wasn’t going to do it” Krzyzewski told the AP. “But now that I am doing it, I can tell you I am doing it with 100 percent commitment and passion — but with seven years of experience of having done it before.”

Krzyzewski will lead the team next summer in the World Cup of Basketball in Spain, where a victory would qualify them for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. The team is 62-1 in the last seven years. Some top NBA stars could commit to the national team. Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony are among the NBA stars who have won multiple gold medals under Krzyzewski, according to ESPN.

According to the AP, Krzyzewski has 957 career victories, most of them coming with the Duke Blue Devils. He ranks as the winningest coach in Division 1 men’s basketball history and has four NCAA championships.

After a disappointing end to the Vancouver Canucks’ season, they appear ready to fire head coach Alain Vigneault.

Rumors have been swirling in Vancouver since last spring, when the Canucks were dismantled in 5 games by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings. According to Sporting News, Vineault has more wins than any other coach in Canucks history. He also led the Canucks to the seventh game of the Stanley Cup Finals in 2011.

The New York Times notes that Vancouver General Manager Mike Gillis said, after his team was swept by San Jose in the opening round, “Alain is a very good hockey coach…he’ll be evaluated like I’ll be evaluated.” In the end, the Vancouver management decided to go in a different direction, despite Vineault’s stellar track record.

The Canucks are usually one of the favorites to contend for the Stanley Cup, in large part because of their amazing roster that features the Sedin brothers, Ryan Kesler, Alexander Edler, Roberto Luongo and many more. For this reason, management might assume that it is easier to tweak the team’s philosophy than to dismantle the powerful roster for a new group of players.

Vigneault’s firing doesn’t assure everyone a free pass, but it does indicate that the Canucks’ roster isn’t due for a major overhaul.

The New York Rangers put themselves in an 0-3 hole in the second round of the NHL playoffs last night when they failed to hang on to a 1-0 lead in the third period against the Boston Bruins. The Rangers were two steps behind the Bruins all night, but Henrik Lundqvist, the Rangers goalie, was stellar, holding off everything the Bruins could muster through two periods.

The Rangers got on the board first when Ryan McDonagh, the Rangers top defensemen, got a puck through from the point that hit Taylor Pyatt and found its way in. From that point forward, the Rangers were on their heels and had no answer to the Bruins forecheck.

However, Lundqvist was superb, as he stepped up making every stop through the second period. According to ESPN, he made 32 saves in all.

Things would change in the third, when the Bruins’ Johnny Boychuck fired a slap shot that found its way through traffic 3:10 into the third, according to NHL.com.

From there, the drubbing would continue, until a wild bounce landed in front of Lundqvist and got jammed home by Daniel Paille at 16:29 of the third. Then the Bruins choked out the clock to secure the win.

After falling down 0-2 in their Western Conference semifinal series with the Los Angeles Kings, the San Jose Sharks fought back to tie the series at two games apiece with a 2-1 victory Tuesday night. The final score does not give an accurate depiction of the game, as the Sharks dominated the Kings in nearly every facet.

San Jose rose to the occasion and pushed back, instead of bowing down to the defending Stanley Cup champions.

“It wasn’t easy,” coach Todd McLellan said, reports <a href= http://www.mercurynews.com/sharks/ci_23295887/%22">Mercury News. “We’re playing against the Stanley Cup champions. They’ve been through this. They’ve worked their way to the pinnacle. They’re making it hard on us — and we’re trying to make it harder on them.”

Joe Thornton was the catalyst for San Jose with his energy and grit, as he set up Brent Burns for a goal in the first period.

“He’s our leader for a reason,” Burns said of Thornton, according to Sports Illustrated. “Everybody keeps saying it. He’s one of the hardest workers we have in here. It’s awesome to play with him when he’s playing like that. It’s a lot of fun.”

Game 5 will be Thursday night in front of a raucous crowd in Los Angeles. Let’s see if the Sharks can continue to play focused and inspired hockey in hostile territory.

Linebacker Brian Urlacher is calling it a career after 13 seasons with the Chicago Bears.

In that time, Urlacher had eight Pro-Bowls seasons, won Defensive Player of the Year in 2005, and made it to the Super Bowl in 2006 as NFC champions. Urlacher announced his retirement on Wednesday through social media accounts.

The 6-foot-4 linebacker was drafted out of New Mexico and brought an enormous amount of speed and quickness to the position. Urlacher certainly made the most of his time in the NFL starting 180 games, recording a team record 1,779 tackles. He also had 41 ½ sacks and 22 interceptions during his storied career, reported the Associated Press.

Urlacher issued a statement on Twitter saying, “After spending a lot of time this spring thinking about my NFL future, I have made a decision to retire. Although I could continue playing, I’m not sure I would bring a level of performance or passion that’s up to my standards. When considering this along with the fact that I could retire after a 13-year career wearing only one jersey for such a storied franchise, my decision became pretty clear, reported ESPN.

Urlacher and the Bears parted ways this offseason after the two could not agree on a deal. It is clear that if he cannot play up to his standards he would rather allow someone else to do the job.

Brian Urlacher will go down as one of the best to play the linebacker position and he leaves the league and the Bears organization with fond memories of a great football player and a better man.

On ESPN’s Mike & Mike in the Morning show Wednesday, Phil Jackson said he simply laughed when Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said that Mike D’Antoni is a better coach for the team.

Since Jackson’s departure from the NBA in 2011, teams have been contacting him to see if he’s interested in being a head coach, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The only time Jackson was interested in coaching again was when the Lakers were seeking for a new head coach after firing former head coach Mike Brown five games into the 2012-13 season.

Instead, the team decided to go with the up-tempo D’Antoni, who Jackson believes was hired only because of Steve Nash. Although Jackson agreed with the hiring because of Nash, he did not agree on how Dwight Howard was handled.

“You have to play in to Dwight Howard. You have to get back and reestablish him as the center that he potentially was going to be,” Jackson said.

The Lakers struggled to get the eighth seed and were eventually swept by the San Antonio Spurs in the first-round of the playoffs.

ESPNJackson has been real critical of the team saying that he would’ve utilized Howard and Pau Gasol the same way he did with Andrew Bynum and Pau when he won back-to-back championship in 2009 and 2010, according to ESPN.com.

Now Jackson is looking to take ownership in a operations position somewhere in the league.

When asked if he was done coaching in the NBA, Jackson simply said, “I am.”

Charles Woodson has signed a one-year, $4.3 million contract with the Oakland Raiders to return to the team that drafted him.

Since Woodson’s departure from the Green Bay Packers, Oakland fans have been hoping that he would return to Oakland. After looking into the Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers, he finally chose to go back to a rebuilding franchise, according to the Oakland Tribune.

Woodson was drafted by the Raiders in 1998 as the fourth overall pick and left the team in 2005. He helped led the Raiders to three straight AFC West titles and a trip to the Super Bowl following the 2002 season, according to the Associated Press.

The 36-year-old will be returning to help a struggling franchise turn around its woes. The Raiders haven’t had a winning season since 2002 and are hoping that Woodson is the key to solving that problem.

In 1997, Woodson won the Heisman Trophy at Michigan. He was also the 2009 Defensive Player of the Year and helped the Packers win the 2010 Super Bowl.

For the second time in three years, the Cleveland Cavaliers have won the NBA lottery granting them the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft.

The Orlando Magic, who had the highest chance of winning the lottery will pick second, followed by the Washington Wizards.

In 2011, the Cavaliers used their No. 1 pick to select Duke’s Kyrie Irving, who went on to become the league’s Rookie of the Year, according to SI.com. Now they will get another opportunity to draft a player to help the team fix its struggles.

Although the upcoming draft does not have any players that can potentially change the Cavaliers franchise around instantly, adding another versatile player to help Irving will be the key.

Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel is the potential No. 1 pick this year, but is recovering from a torn ACL, according to the Associated Press. Kansas’ Ben McLemore is the other player who has been seen as a high potential pick.

Nonetheless, the Cavaliers and the Magic will be able to draft two promising players.

Syracuse Orange head coach Jim Boeheim is convinced that Carmelo Anthony will never win a championship if the New York Knicks remain with the same lineup.

Boeheim has been a loyal fan of Anthony ever since the superstar led the Orange to the 2003 NCAA championship, according to ESPN.com.

The Knicks were eliminated in Game 6 by the Indiana Pacers. Anthony scored 39 points, but Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton barely made any contributions.

“Not on that team. He did what he can do. He played very well the final game. Everybody’s killing him,” Boeheim told The Post-Standard.

When Anthony arrived in New York, Boeheim knew that all the blame would be put on him whatever the scenario was, according to the New York Daily News.

With that being said, Anthony is the only superstar from the 2003 NBA draft that hasn’t won a championship. Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh have all won a championship.

Championships have never been won with just one superstar, but two or more.

“I believe that he’s good enough to win an NBA championship, but he needs another guy with him. Hopefully he’ll get that opportunity with him some day,” Boeheim said.
