Fred Couples shoots 62 at AT&T Championship

Fred Couples shot a course record 10-under 62 on Saturday to take a seven stroke lead in the AT&T Championship.

Couples birdied six of the first seven holes and had 12 overall in the round at TPC San Antonio’s Canyon Course, according to USA Today.

“It was just a lot of birdies, which you need to do, though I don’t think you need to get 12 of them,” said Couples. “You don’t get leads like this very often.”

Mark Calcavecchia is now in second place after his bogey-free round of 66.

Nick Price shot a respectable round of 69 and is in third place, eight strokes behind Couples, according to Fox News.

Couples’ seven stroke lead is the largest 36-hole lead in a 50-and-over tour event since Isao Aoki, Hale Irwin and Larry Nelson held an eight stroke lead at an event in 1988.

Couples’ remarkable second round broke pushed him to break the tournament record of 130, achieved by Mark McNulty in 1994. His round of 62 tied the single round record, set by Gil Morgan in 2004 and repeated by John Harris in 2005.
