Gaming News: Civilization V invades North America, to power American classroom

Take-Two Interactive Software, 2K and Firaxis Games in partnership with nonprofit tech firm GlassLab, which also made SimCityEDU, is taking a version of Sid Meier’s Civilization V into North America’s classroom. Sid Meier announced the partnership at the 13th Annual Games for Change Festival in New York.

According to VentureBeat, the partnership will offer CivilizationEDU, an educational version of Civilization optimized for classrooms learning, to North American high schools later this year.

The educational version will include features such as a learning analytics engine to track students’ progression and an online hub for teachers to work on lesson plans. Additionally, developer diaries, tutorial videos, and other resources will also be made available.

Developed by Firaxis Games, Sid Meier’s Civilization V is a history-inspired, turn-based strategy game, where each player represents the leader of a certain nation or ethnic group and must guide its growth over the course of thousands of years.

The award-winning series was one of the most critically acclaimed PC games of 2010 and has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide.

In addition, GlassLab will be integrating a learning analytics engine to CivilizationEDU to capture students’ progress and assess their problem-solving skills, providing teachers with a dashboard of their progress and powerful tool for the classroom.

However, specific gameplay details aren’t available at this time, but game developer Firaxis has confirmed the game will be available in fall of 2017.

“CivilizationEDU is a perfect example of how games can be used to teach and assess key 21st-century skills that are hard to measure on multiple-choice tests,” added Connie Yowell, CEO of Collective Shift and LRNG, which is merging with GlassLab, via the Develop-online.net.
