Giants place Sandoval on 15-day disabled list

The San Francisco Giants place third baseman Pablo Sandoval on the 15-day DL with a strained left foot on Tuesday.

According to The Associated Press, Sandoval will be in a walking boot for  a week and then be reevaluated. The Giants called up infielder Nick Noonan from Triple-A Fresno.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy is optimistic that Sandoval will be ready to play when he is eligible to come off the DL on June 25. “We’re thinking that in 15 days, this thing will subside and calm down and he’ll be good to go.”

The reigning World Series MVP was hitting .289 with eight home runs and 37 runs batted in this season in 57 games.

According to San Jose Mercury News, Sandoval will work on weight loss during his brief stint on the disabled list. Bochy and head trainer Dave Groeschner said Sandoval will be worked hard during his rehab in order to keep his weight controlled.

“With the two weeks off, that will be a priority for Pablo,” Bochy said, “To try and shed a few pounds.”
