North Carolina leading scorer P. J. Hairston was arrested Wednesday at a traffic stop for possession of 1½ ounces of marijuana and driving without a license. Now, it is being reported that a gun was also found in Hairston’s possession.
According to the Associated Press, police seized a 9mm handgun and ammunition found on the ground by the rented 2013 GMC Yukon Hairston was driving.
Police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said the pistol is not reported as stolen, but it is still being determined as to who owns the gun.
The police are also investigating the rental agreement found in the car. Neither Hairston nor the passengers in the car are 25, the legal age to rent a car.
University of North Carolina athletic spokesman Steve Kirschner said that Roy Williams and athletic director Bubba Cunningham are aware of the arrest and have not made a decision regarding Hairston’s future.
“We don’t have all the facts,” Kirschner said. “We will continue to monitor and gain as many facts as we can. And at the appropriate time, we’ll make an announcement when we feel we have enough facts to do so.”
Hairston averaged 14.6 points per game and made 89 three-pointers for the Tar Heels this past season, according to Fox News.
