Houston Astros most profitable team in history
The Houston Astros have a 43-86 record, which is the worst in the majors. That’s not good news if you are an Astros fan. However, if you are Astros owner Jim Crane, the good news is that the Astros are the most profitable team in 2013 and will become the most profitable team in baseball history.
According to Forbes, the Astros are on track to earn an estimated $99 million in operating income this season, which is nearly as much as the estimated income of the previous six World Series champions combined. Soaring television revenues and slashed payroll expenses have contributed to the Astros being so profitable. The highest-paid Astros player is pitcher Erik Bedard, who’s playing on a one-year, $1.15 million contract, Forbes reports.
The Astros opened the year with a league-low $26 million payroll. Since then, they have cut their payroll to $13 million by trading or releasing four of the five players who were earning more than $1 million this season, according to Sports Illustrated.
Crane told ESPN The Magazine, “Once our minor league system is filled in, we’ll move up into the top five or 10 in payroll,” notes Forbes.
Currently, there are 64 major league players who make more individually than the entire Astros roster. But it won’t matter what other players make as long as the Astros are making a profit.
