Jay-Z looking to sign Cuban baseball stars
Jay-Z and Roc Nation Sports are apparently looking to expand their clientele by targeting Cuban MLB stars, rookie Yasiel Puig and Yoenis Cespedes.
Sources told Yahoo! Sports that Jay-Z has been trying to sign, or at least has shown interest in signing, Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland Athletics. Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports has been taken the sports agency world by storm, most recently with their addition of Oklahoma City Thunder Star, Kevin Durant.
Puig and Cespedes would be the latest big time additions to Jay-Z’s agency, which includes clientele such as New York Yankees Robinson Cano and New York Jets Geno Smith.
Puig has met with Jay-Z before. The rookie was invited to a party at a club Jay-Z owns in New York back in June. Apparently, he was intrigued when he left the meeting. Cespedes will be in Jay-Z’s hometown, New York, for the All-Star game next week, so it will be interesting to see if the two meet. If Puig wins the final vote he could be there as well.
However, it might not make sense for the Cubans to sign with Jay-Z due to their current contracts, according to SB Nation. For Puig, leaving his agent, Jaime Torres, would result in Torres getting the full commission on Puig’s seven-year, $42 million deal that he signed in June of 2012. Cespedes, on the other hand, has two years left on his own contract.
Jay-Z and his wife Beyoncé visited Cuba in April, which caused some issues with the government. Perhaps their visit caused Jay-Z’s desire to become closer with the MLB Cuban defectors.
