Jonathan Vilma to undergo knee surgery out for rest of preseason
New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma will be out the rest of the preseason after electing to get knee surgery.
NFL.com reports that Vilma opted for arthroscopic knee surgery after seeking a second opinion Wednesday.Vilma will undergo a minor procedure in Philadelphia on Thursday.
Vilma is expected to be ready week one of the regular season when the Saints face-off against the Atlanta Falcons on September 8.
ESPN notes that the surgery is being performed to reduce some of the swelling and discomfort Vilma has been experiencing in the knee. Vilma has only participated in two practices in Training Camp and did not play in the first preseason game.
According to SI.com, Vilma only played in 11 games last season because of knee problems. He had 37 tackles and one sack in 2012.
The 31-year-old won a Super Bowl with the Saints and then took a pay cut to remain on the Saints this season.He had been scheduled to earn $4.8 million in base salary but now will make $1 million.
