Kevin Love on the Verge of History
Kevin Love continues his tremendous season and is now on the verge of being a new leader in the record books. When his Minnesota Timberwolves take the court on Wednesday night against the Indiana Pacers, Love has the opportunity to break the record for consecutive double-doubles in a single season.
The fifth overall pick of the 2008 NBA draft from UCLA has experienced success on every level of the game. Love was named the Gatorade National Player of the year out of Lake Oswego Oregon in 2007. He then went on to play at UCLA for a single season where he led them to a final four appearance in just his freshman season.
He currently has 51 straight double-doubles, which places him in a tie with Hall of Famer Moses Malone, who accomplished the feat over the span of the 1977-1978 and 1978-1979 seasons. In a losing effort, Love posted totals of 23 points, five rebounds, five assists one block and a steal as the Mavericks edged the Timberwolves 108-105 to tie the record.
Love has been one of the few bright spots on a team that is 15-50 and tied with the Cleveland Cavaliers as the only teams in the league to accumulate 50 losses this season. If his team was competitive this season, there is no reason why Love could not be mentioned along with the names of James, Rose and Durant in the MVP race. The performance of his team has overshadowed how outstanding his play has been this year. If Love and the remaining young core of the Timberwolves can continue to grow, they have the potential contending team in the near future.
