The Los Angeles Lakers might have a chance of prying DeMar DeRozan away from the Toronto Raptors in free agency with the latest Lakers rumors claiming that the Raptors wingman is willing to meet with the L.A. team.
According to Sam Amick of USA Today Sports, the Lakers could get a free agent meeting with DeMar DeRozan, who is reportedly set to demand a five-year $153 million deal from the Raptors. Toronto management stated earlier in the offseason that they prioritize re-signing their star player.
If DeMar DeRozan and the Raptors can’t agree to a deal, it is expected that a team like the Lakers will jump at the chance of stealing the free agent and offer him with their own max deal.
However, a max deal in Toronto is worth more than a max deal in Los Angeles as the Raptors holds the right to offer more money and more years in the contract.
Amick also adds that some other teams are waiting on DeRozan’s status with the Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat, New York Knicks and Orlando Magic and Golden State Warriors reportedly having “interest” in the Raptors guard/forward.
The Lakers can offer two max players in the 2016 offseason with many free agents linked to the Hollywood team. Kevin Durant, Nicolas Batum, Hassan Whiteside and Al Horford, among others, are the possible free agent targets for the Los Angeles squad.
DeMar DeRozan is likely staying with the Toronto Raptors this summer. However, with the Los Angeles Lakers aggressive in their pursuit, there is a small chance that DeRozan goes to L.A. especially if the Raptors can’t give the wingman the max deal he wants.
