Landon Donovan not retiring, set to play for Galaxy this year
Soccer superstar Landon Donovan will play for the Los Angeles Galaxy this year, despite reports that he was considering retirement.
According to The Los Angeles Times, Donovan was not at Major League Soccer’s open training camp for reigning champions, but Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said Donovan is playing for the team.
“[Donovan] will be playing in 2013 for the Galaxy,” Arena said.
Donovan is the Galaxy’s captain and all-time top scorer, with 92 regular-season career goals. He also helped the team to its second consecutive MLS title.
According to NBC Sports, this would be the Donovan’s 13th MLS season. Arena said he could not comment on when the 30-year-old will return because it’s still unclear. He also isn’t sure if he’ll be ready for the Galaxy’s March 3 season opener.
“I think he just needs a little bit more of an extended leave of absence,” Arena said. “He’s got a couple of years that have taken its toll and he just needs a little bit more time.”
