Matthew Thomas will honor commitment to Florida State

One of the top linebackers in the nation, Matthew Thomas, has decided to stay at Florida State and not enroll at USC.

According to ESPN, Thomas spoke with head coach Jimbo Fisher Tuesday and informed the Seminoles that he would be honoring his commitment and will play for Florida State.

Thomas was one of the most highly touted recruits in the nation coming out of high school in Florida. However, it was reported that he originally chose USC but his mother wouldn’t sign the letter of intent. Thomas instead signed with the Seminoles to stay closer to home, although many speculated that the top recruit was still considering USC.

With all of the confusion surrounding the prospect, Thomas and coach Fisher spoke and in a statement given to shortly after the exchange, Thomas ended all doubt by saying, “after meeting with coach Fisher and his staff and gathering all the information, I have decided to honor my commitment to Florida State.”

Thomas will be joining a Seminoles defense that ranked sixth in the country in points against at 14.7, and will be returning 9 of 11 members for the 2013 season.
