Mark Sanchez will start on Saturday for second straight game
The New York Jets are not expected to be a very good football team in this upcoming season, yet everyone loves to talk about them. They still don’t know who will start at quarterback in week one of the regular season, but for now incumbent Mark Sanchez will start his second straight preseason game against the Jaguars.
This announcement comes on the heels of Wednesday’s news that Sanchez’s competition, rookie Geno Smith, had a brutal day of practice on Wednesday according to head coach Rex Ryan, reports NFL.com.
Sanchez started off last weeks preseason game against the Detroit Lions in brutal fashion when he attempted to throw a screen pass, but it was intercepted and taken back for a touchdown by Ezekiel Ansah. Sanchez however did recover and led the Jets on a touchdown scoring drive the next time out.
When asked why he named Sanchez the starter for week two of the preseason, Ryan gave two reasons, Geno Smith’s ankle injury, and Sanchez’s strong week of practice, ESPN.com reports. This seems more like a case of take the best of the worst, but either way Sanchez has a chance to take advantage of Smith’s injury.
Ryan did make it very clear though that the competition is not over by any means. The plan is for the Jets to take the competition into week three of the preseason and then name a starter for week one of the regular season when they take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
