Marvel reveals three possible directors for Captain Marvel movie

Phase three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was officially launched with the release of Captain America: Civil War. In November, it will be followed by Doctor Strange, rounding up the MCU releases for 2016. Another title many fans are looking forward to is the upcoming Captain Marvel movie, which will feature one of the few female protagonists in this genre of films. Brie Larson is already confirmed to be cast as the titular character, and recent reports indicate that the MCU has already narrowed down the directing helm to three names.

The first director on the list is Niki Caro, who is best known for her movie, Whale Rider, which garnered an Oscar nomination in 2004. She followed up with another drama, North Country, which starred Charlize Theron (who’d actually also make a pretty good Captain Marvel).

Lesli Linka Glatter, may not be as known in the movie world, but the television shows she has directed are some of the most critically-acclaimed ones, to date. This bevy of shows includes Homeland, Ray Donovan, the Newsroom, True Blood, Mad Men, ER and the West Wing, to name a few.

The last director in the list is Lorene Scafaria, who is more known as a writer, having penned the stories for movies like Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. She made her directorial debut with the Meddler, which was a drama, comedy featuring the acting chops of the legendary Susan Sarandon and Rose Byrne.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the next step of the selection process for the three directors will be to prepare detailed presentations of the Captain Marvel movie, based on treatments and documents that will be provided by the company.

Other choices who were in the initial shortlist also included Jennifer Kent, who directed the horror hit, the Babadook and Jennifer Yuh, who helmed Kung Fu Panda 2. The movie has already brought in screenwriters Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve to ensure that Captain Marvel is a girl-powered, action-packed big-screen adventure.

The Captain Marvel movie is set for release on March 8, 2019.
