Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings play for their third gold in beach volleyball
One thing that hasn’t changed in these Olympcis has been the play of Misty May-Treanor and her teammate Kerri Walsh-Jennings, who just defeated the Chinese team to advance to the final and play for their third straight gold medal at the 2012 Olympics.
Treanor and Walsh defeated Xue Chen and Zhang Xi, who won the bronze medal in Beijing, 22-20, 22-20. Chen and Xi will have the opportunity to clinch at least a silver medal at these Olympics.
Winning gold medals at Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008, they now await Americans Jennifer Kessy and April Ross and Juliana and Larissa, who are the top-seeded Brazilians in their semi-final game that will decide who they will compete against for another gold medal.
With each victory, Treanor and Walsh are proving to be one of the best volleyball teams to every play in these Olympics, as they continue to add to their already impressive record. They have now won 20 straight matches, and are looking to look for number 21.
“We just defeated the best team in the world for the past year. These Chinese women are great athletes,” Walsh Jennings said over the stadium sound system after the win. “We know we have this in us, we’ve just got to go execute.”
In this match, the Americans had their toughest challenge yet, as the Chinese were right there with them until they faltered like every other single team that has played against these two.
UPDATE: May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings did complete their three-peat Wednesday night.
