MLB Rumors: New York Mets targeting San Diego Padres 1B James Loney

The New York Mets lost starting first baseman Lucas Duda to injury on May 23 and the team is looking for a replacement. According to the latest MLB rumors, the Mets are interested in James Loney of the San Diego Padres.

Duda was having a good season with a .231 batting average, a .297 OBP and .431 SLG with seven home runs and 19 RBIs. However, he was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his lower back and he’s expected to be out for four to six weeks.

CBS New York noted in their report that the Mets have no solid backup options at first base with Ty Kelly getting called up. Third baseman David Wright and outfielders Michael Conforto and Alejandro De Aza are other potential in-house options.

Other MLB Rumors: Toronto Blue Jays trading reliever Drew Storen

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets are meeting with Legacy Agency, the representatives of Padres first baseman James Loney. The 32-year-old is currently in the minor leagues and he has an opt-out option on his contract if another MLB team wants to sign him.

However, Buster Olney noted in his report that the Padres can call up Loney then trade him for a prospect to the Mets. He is currently hitting .333 with 2 home runs and 23 RBIs in 39 games for the El Paso Chihuahuas.

The Mets are currently second in the NL East standings with a 26-19 record. They need to find a temporary replacement for Duda to maintain the distance between them and the Washington Nationals.

Other MLB Rumors: Kansas City Royals interested in Reds right fielder Jay Bruce

Forbes suggested other trade options at first base for the Mets including Chris Carter of the Milwaukee Brewers, Mark Reynolds of the Colorado Rockies and Jay Bruce of the Cincinnati Reds.
