UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson is currently the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world while lightweight champion Conor McGregor is at No. 2. In an interview, the “Mighty Mouse” expressed his intention to fight “The Notorious” at featherweight, saying that the negotiation will be easier than the McGregor-Mayweather superfight.
“He would have to make 145, I would not be able to make 155 pounds,” Johnson told TMZ. “I would say that fight is absolutely easier to get done than the Floyd Mayweather fight.”
UFC: Conor McGregor vs Demetrious Johnson at 145
At UFC on Fox 24, Demetrious Johnson successfully defended his title after beating Wilson Reis via armbar in the third round. With the victory, Johnson tied former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva for most consecutive title defenses in UFC history. The “Mighty Mouse” isn’t a pay-per-view seller like Conor McGregor.
However, there is no doubt that he’s one of the best MMA fighters in the world. Johnson’s statement isn’t a way of boasting but showing how confident he is in facing a tough opponent. His potential bout against McGregor will surely catch the attention of MMA fans.
Both UFC champs are good standup fighters. McGregor won the featherweight and lightweight belts with his incredible striking force. Meanwhile, Johnson is currently one of the fastest MMA fighters. He’s recognized for his quick striking and elusive movement.
As of now, the fight between McGregor and Johnson is unlikely to happen. “The Notorious” is currently focused on his upcoming bout with undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. Though there are no official details yet regarding the bout, both fighters already agreed to fight each other in the boxing ring.
Dana White: Demetrious Johnson could be the G.O.A.T.
After defending the title for the 10th time, UFC president Dana White believes UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson can be considered the Greatest of All Time. White sees the improvement of Johnson every time he fights and urges him to win one more fight to break Anderson Silva’s record.
“He’s got one more fight and he breaks Anderson Silva’s record. He’s already the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, and he strives to be better each time. And he gets better each time, literally destroying people,” said White during the UFC on FOX 24 post-fight press conference. “This kid could be considered the GOAT right now. Or to give Anderson Silva the true respect, you wait until he actually breaks the record.”
