UFC lightweight contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson will fight at UFC 209 for the interim belt. “El Cucuy” warns Khabib to focus on their upcoming bout if he doesn’t want to be like former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos.
“Khabib, you better focus on this fight and not McGregor, buddy,” Ferguson said. “Because you’re looking too far and you’re making the same mistake that Rafael Dos Anjos made. That dude’s got no problems for me, so long as my conditioning and my feet are underneath me. I’m geared up from the feet up as far as conditioning wise, and this guy won’t make me quit. I’m going to bring it all to him.”
Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson are eyeing to strengthen their chance to fight Conor McGregor for the UFC lightweight title. “The Notorious” succeeded to acquire his second belt after defeating Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205. However, after the fight, he decided to take a “10-month off” to spend more time with his family.
Since then, Nurmagomedov, who remains undefeated with a 24-0 MMA record, continued to campaign for the UFC to create an interim lightweight title. He called out Ferguson to fight him but “El Cucuy” is only interested in fighting McGregor. Nurmagomedov even offered Ferguson extra cash just to make the fight happen.
Luckily, all his efforts paid off as the bout is officially settled at UFC 209. Nurmagomedov was supposed to face Ferguson at The UFC Fighter 22 Finale. Unfortunately, an injury forced him to pull out from the fight. As of now, Ferguson is on a nine-fight winning streak, making him a very deserving title contender.
Tony Ferguson responded to Nurmagomedov’s threat
His latest victory was against former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos at The UFC Ultimate Fighter Latin America 3 Finale. Since Nurmagomedov-Ferguson UFC 209 bout became official, both fighters continued to trade insults. In an interview with Fox Sports, Nurmagomedov vowed to break Ferguson’s arm in their upcoming fight.
“If Tony Ferguson gives me this arm, I’m going to break his arm like Frank Mir-(Antonio Rodrigo) Nogueira,” Nurmagomedov said. Ferguson first called Nurmagomedov a “stalker” for popping up to Twitter notifications whenever he posts anything. “El Cucuy” responded to his opponent’s threat in a recent interview with FightHubTV.
“This dude says he wants to break my arm,” he said with an angry look on his face. “I’m gonna tell you like I told other people. I like to hold my kid, I have a newborn. I broke my arm once, but I knocked that dude down with the same arm. I’ll pimp smack that dude if he tries to break my arm. Go for it, dude. You try it, bro. You try to break it you’re gonna have problems, I’m going to come at you with everything else, because I got elbows, I got knees, kicks … I’m gonna hit you with everything I got.”
Ferguson felt like Nurmagomedov only sees him as stepping stone to fight Conor McGregor. The idea made Ferguson mad and he intends to make Khabib suffer like Rafael Dos Anjos.
