NBA Rumors: Boston Celtics’ Plan B includes Chandler Parsons, Nicolas Batum and Ryan Anderson?

The Boston Celtics are expected to be the most aggressive teams in free agency with a big salary cap space and trade pieces this 2016 offseason. NBA rumors has linked them to top free agent Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder but according to other reports they have a “Plan B” in getting cheaper options in the free agency market.

They might not be Kevin Durant quality but the Celtics could target the likes of Ryan Anderson (New Orleans Pelicans), Pau Gasol (Chicago Bulls), Chandler Parsons (Dallas Mavericks) and Nicolas Batum (Charlotte Hornets), according to Hoops Rumors.

In the site’s analysis of Boston’s offseason plans, it said that the Celtics have an unlikely chance of landing Durant despite having over $50 million in salary cap space this summer. The Celtics also have the No. 3 pick in the 2016 NBA Draft which they can use to dangle to the Thunder, if they are willing to do a sign-and-trade and if Durant tells the OKC franchise that he wants to leave the team.

However, Durant and the Thunder had a very successful run in the 2016 NBA Playoffs. They made the Western Conference Finals and forced the defending champions Golden State Warriors to a Game 7, which means they were just one win away from the NBA Finals.

If Durant is satisfied with what OKC has achieved in their postseason run, he might re-sign in OKC leaving the Celtics and other teams to target other free agents in the market. NBA rumors has linked Durant not only to Boston but to other contenders like the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors plus other teams like the Washington Wizards and Los Angeles Lakers.

Of the four free agents mentioned that could be targeted by the Celtics, Anderson and Batum are the most interesting options since they are power forwards that can hit the shot from outside. One of the weaknesses of the Celtics the last playoffs was their inability to consistently hit the three-pointer.

Parsons could be a fit too and he could start at either the small forward or shooting guard spot in Boston. Gasol is a veteran big man and his passing from the post could add a new dimension for the deep Celtics team.

The Celtics have salary cap space and valuable trade pieces to offer this summer making them the major player in free agency in the headlines of NBA rumors for the rest of the offseason.
