NBA Rumors: Derek Fisher says he can lure Durant and Westbrook if hired as Lakers head coach

NBA rumors are circulating the Los Angeles Lakers who are in search for a new coach after recently firing Byron Scott. Derek Fisher, a former Lakers point guard, expressed his desire to be hired for the job.

The Lakers were having trouble signing top free agents in the past seasons wherein they failed to re-sign Dwight Howard, closed the deal with Carmelo Anthony and getting the service of LaMarcus Aldridge though they were ready to sign any players to a maximum contract if the player demands.

With this, the Lakers might be considering hiring a coach that have connections with the incoming free agents in the off-season and Derek Fisher was one of them.

According to New York Daily News, Fisher was hoping that his connections to Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook will make him suitable for the Lakers’ job.

Durant was the top prospect of the Lakers in the free agency but they admitted that it was a tough competition for them since most of the NBA teams were interested in getting the service of the Oklahoma City Thunder superstar.

If Fisher’s claim was true, it is possible to see both superstars on the same team since they were known to have a close ties knowing that recently, Durant defended Westbrook against Mark Cuban’s statement.

Fisher’s coaching under Phil Jackson’s New York Knicks did not succeed after finishing with a record of 40-96 including 17-65 in his only full season with the team. There were speculations that there were issues regarding Fisher’s imperfect usage of Jackson’s triangle offense that led him to be fired from the coaching position.

Derek Fisher will be battling among other candidates including Jeff Van Gundy, Mark Jackson, Ettore Messina, Kevin Ollie and Luke Walton who were also on the list to be the next Lakers’ head coach.

However, there were no details revealed yet by the Lakers’ management regarding their next move after firing Byron Scott. But for sure, they were making intense studies on how they can perfectly rebuild and revive the Lakers who were once a threat to every team in the league.
