NBA Rumors: Heat trading Hassan Whiteside if he does not live up to his huge contract?

The Miami Heat’s offseason did not go quite as planned even though they re-signed center Hassan Whiteside. According to the latest NBA rumors in South Beach, the Heat could trade Hassan Whiteside if he fails to live up to his four-year, $98 million deal.

Team president Pat Riley tried to sign Kevin Durant before the 2014 MVP decided to join the Golden State Warriors. Then the Heat lost Dwyane Wade to the Chicago Bulls after they tried low-balling him despite all the sacrifices he made in the 13 years he spent in Miami.

Despite all of that, the Heat are still a playoff contender with Whiteside and Goran Dragic leading the way. And if Chris Bosh gets cleared to play, they can make it past the first round and give teams such as the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors a run for their money.

NBA rumors in Miami imply that the Heat were very interested in Russell Westbrook if he was available at the 2017 offseason. However, Westbrook decided to renegotiate his contract with the OKC Thunder and he will not hit the open market until the summer of 2018.

According to Ira Winderman of The Sun-Sentinel, the Heat can use Hassan Whiteside to attract free agents in 2017 and 2018 especially if he becomes an even better player. But there is still a chance that he would not live up to his contract and Miami might end up trading him

“With Westbrook off the board for two years, and effectively out of the Heat’s reach in 2018 should he bypass his player option, it allows the Heat to more immediately address the long view with potential trades, be it with Dragic or a Hassan Whiteside who doesn’t live up to his four-year, $98 million deal,” Winderman reported.

It should be noted that these are just NBA rumors and the Heat are not planning to rebuild just yet. However, their future is a little murky with Whiteside prone to regression and Bosh’s health problems, and that may be enough for Pat Riley to at least plan ahead.
